It took a moment for Jake to process what she was trying to tell him, but then his jaw dropped. “Aunt Caroline?”


“Yes, Caroline. You know how your father was. And their parents, too.” She held up her hand. “I know she has her problems, too, but I see a different side to her. Anyway, I’d probably be okay with telling folks even now, but I don’t think Caroline would. And certainly not when she sees how folks acted about you being gay.”


He could barely believe it. His mother’s sister and his father’s sister? Together? “How long?”


“Since just after you were born, actually.”


Suzy nodded sadly. “Yes, do you really want that?”


Jake sat in his car just down the street from Damian’s Birmingham house for a good half hour. He wasn’t quite sure what he waited for. Delaying the confrontation wasn’t going to make it any easier.
