“Yes. I-I know there’s no excuse for me bailing on you like that with just a note.”
“Like before,” Damian said softly.
The pain in Damian’s voice pierced him. Damn, he really had been a dick.
“Yeah.” Jake’s voice cracked. “I’ve been a coward all my life. You think I could stand up and be a man for once. But I didn’t. I panicked when Margery saw us and I knew she’d blab all about me…about us.”
“Did she?”
“Of course.” Jake smiled a little. “It’s all over my hometown. I wish I could say it doesn’t bother me anymore, but it does.”
“Well, I’m sorry about that, Jake. I didn’t intend to make it difficult for you.”
“I know. You didn’t. I made it difficult for myself. I should have stuck around and worked things out. I’ve been hiding so long, I don’t know how to do anything else. Or I didn’t. I don’t want to hide anymore.”
Damian leaned forward, his hands folded in his lap. “What are you saying, Jake?”
