He drove to Marleena’s house and saw River’s rental car parked in front. There was a single light in the living room. No party. Just two lovers.Pain laced through his whole body so hard, he gripped the steering wheel and rested his head on it. Still, when he returned to his hotel room, the first thing he checked for was messages. The red message light wasn’t on. He called River, but had to leave a voice mail.

Greg’s chest continued to ache with disappointment. He’d opened himself up to vulnerability, knowing what the cost might be. Now he wondered how he was going to endure a repeat of the aftermath of his win six years ago.
