Chapter 16

“You’d better be. We’ll talk later,” Deacon said before returning his attention to the customer.

As Max and Jack left the shop, Max paused in the doorway, scanning the street. When Jack asked, he said, “If he’s around, he’s staying well hidden.” Still, he couldn’t help but tense up as they went to where they’d parked the car.

“I feel like we should check under the hood, to make sure he hasn’t planted a bomb,” Jack said, looking as if he meant it.

“No,” Max replied as they got into the car. “Whatever he’s got planned, he’ll do it up close and personal. Besides, it’s too soon. If I don’t miss my guess, he wants to drag this out until I’m a basket case. Then, he’ll strike.”

“At least you’ll have Deacon watching your back.”

“Ourbacks. It was good of him to offer.”

Jack managed to grin. “He likes you, of course he did.”
