These were the people he would serve. These were the people who now looked to him and James to ease their pain, to work to secure their rights. All eyes were turned to the two men as they stood before them.

Morgan heard James’ intake of breath. The two men raised their heads and proudly squared their shoulders. They lifted their hands in greeting and were greeted in return with cheers and war cries. Robert led them forward. As he did, flute music and drums began to play. The people began to chant. Miriam and Megan fell in behind them. Morgan saw his mother and father standing with Sarah and Katie. Next to them was Henry Walks with Deer, his great grandfather.

Morgan stopped and stepped toward the old man. James came and stood beside them. “Did you know—that day in the cemetery?” Morgan asked.
