This was probably a lesson to learn. Easy money was seldom that. Money had to be earned. Taking the money had almost guaranteed caring for Dearne would plunge him into some kind of turmoil. He pulled his clothes on and set the fire on the range. Once it was burning happily he hung the kettle over the fire to boil and set about buttering some bread. That would have to serve for breakfast.

He took a deep breath and then put a cup of tea and some bread and butter on a plate and took it into the bedchamber. If he wanted to be ridiculous about getting up and joining him then he would just leave it on the bedside. He shouldered the door to open it and when he turned he found Dearne propped up on the pillow staring at him.

“I brought you something to eat.” He put the tray beside the bed.

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.” Will nodded. He looked at Dearne and then found it hard to look away. His hair was awry, his face pale, and his eyes were red rimmed. “How are you feeling?”
