Dearne was panting heavily and rubbing his leg.

“Are you in pain?”

Dearne grunted.

“Lie back and try to control your breathing. If they get in they will hear you.”

Dearne bit back a snappy retort when Will held up his hand. “Here they are. Do you know them?”

Dearne craned his neck and peered through to look at the carriage which drew up by Will’s cottage. It was unmarked, and Dearne was faintly relieved it was not Holbrook’s carriage. It pained him to think his brother might really be trying to have him murdered. The groom got down and opened the door and a young woman got down and shook out her travelling gown. 8

Dearne’s jaw tightened as he watched the young woman march to the door of the cottage, the groom trailing behind her.

“You know her?”

Dearne said nothing, eyes pinned on the scene unfolding in front of them.

“Well?”
