Chapter 29

“Cheers.” Jonno flicked it open and turned the pages, then folded it and handed it to Will. Sure enough, there it was in the obituary column.

Memoriam: Captain Maximilian Arthur George Dearne, youngest son of the fourth Earl of Holbrook, lost in Belgium following the glorious victory…

Will scanned the rest of the words holding his breath. “Could…could I borrow this a moment?” he said. Both Jonno and Bob nodded so he sauntered out to the yard in what he hoped was a casual way. He found Dearne sat on a bale of hay watching whilst a groom finished brushing the horse.

“Are you ready?” he asked. Dearne nodded wearily. Well, he didn’t look too good, but he definitely wasn’t dead. Will grabbed the bag with his things in and then sat beside Dearne on the hay bale. The groom had disappeared, so he took a breath.

“Will the landlord recognise you here?”

Dearne frowned. “No. Never been in. Think the last time I was here I was about twelve years old. Feel rather guilty I never visited.”
