“Asylum?” he repeated. “Cured?”

Will kept his gaze resolutely on his plate and resumed eating. When he had swallowed, he replied. “Yes.”

“Will, I…what…is a cure even possible?”

“No. Don’t ask me what they did to me in there because I can’t talk about it.”

Dearne was filled with the need to take Will into his arms and hold him tight but he could do nothing in the middle of the bar. He couldn’t even touch him, or hold his hand. He picked up his spoon and then put it down again.

“How old were you when you were sent down from Oxford?” Dearne asked the question gently.

“Twenty.”

“How old are you now?”

“Three and thirty.”

Dearne didn’t ask the question burning in his chest. Instead he applied himself to the food and Will did the same.

“I escaped.”

Dearne held his breath.
