Augustus rushed to his aid and helped support his mother. Lady Holbrook was a handsome woman, the same height as her husband and of similar proportions. Once Augustus had seated her and fanned her with his handkerchief, she was able to open her eyes again and look at her brother in law.


“Captain Dearne,” she uttered, in faint tones. “What is this…miracle?”


“Dearest sister, you overstate,” Dearne said. He went and bent over her hand, and then kissed her on the cheek. “How fare you, my dear?”


“Much better for seeing you. Holbrook! Holbrook!” She called to her husband who appeared to be rooted to the spot.
