“Well, he kept trying to find ways to persuade me I didn’t need Miss Rose anymore. Said I didn’t need a companion as I had Eleanor.” Araminta’s chin lifted.

“He couldn’t insist you give her up.” Dearne was shocked.

“He tried. He kept reminding me it was he who paid her wages.”

Dearne bit back the retort which came to mind. The miserable bastard.

“Well, I wasn’t having any of that, I can tell you, but it was a constant strain. Anyway, when I decided I would move to Denton, the question of a companion was resolved. Miss Rose would need to come with me.”

Dearne’s head was spinning. “He’s not going to want you to try and move to Denton because if he has sold it, you would discover the truth.”

Araminta looked at him. “Exactly.”
