“I think I am going to spend the night here and then repair to Denton Manor. I need the quiet.” He turned to Araminta. “Minty, I don’t suppose you would be an absolute darling and come with me, would you?” Her eyes widened and he was sure the colour drained from her face.


She rallied admirably. “Of…of course, my love.”


“Bring Miss Rose, too. I think you would both enjoy the country.” He patted her hand. “Holbrook, you would be most welcome, too.”


Holbrook looked grim. “Thank you, but we are settled here now. I doubt my wife would want to go gallivanting about the countryside, and in fairness I think you should consider this carefully. Denton has been empty for a while, but here you have all the comforts you need.”


Dearne sighed wearily. “That is true, but I can’t live on your charity indefinitely.”
