He got up and paced the room. Damn Dearne and his ridiculous, dramatic declarations. He scrubbed his face with his hands, but he could still smell Dearne on them. He dropped them to his side. He needed to make sure there was no real, material threat to Dearne and then get on with finding somewhere to live. Establishing himself and making sure he, too, was safe.

Not much to ask.

Dammit, he needed to go for a walk.

Dearne watched as Will stomped away from the house, seemingly headed for the gardens, and felt like a complete fool. What in God’s name had possessed him to say those words? Will Marsden was the prickliest bastard alive and he should have known something like this would happen. He should have known what his reaction would be. But just for once, it would have been good if Will could have just said something nice instead of behaving as though he had done something dreadful. He sighed. Perhaps the thought of being loved by him was dreadful.
