The door opened again, making Will hold his breath, but fortunately it was only Dearne. He came in looking serious, and frowned at Araminta. “You shouldn’t be in here,” he said.

“I know; I was just leaving. Think about my proposal, Will.” She actually winked and Will felt his face heat and realised he was probably gawping.

“What was that about?” Dearne said, frowning at the door Araminta had just closed. “Never mind. Will…” He hesitated. “Will, your father is here.” 24
