Chapter 9

I took off my tie and tossed it in a trash can on the way out of the building. I even removed my jacket and undid the top three buttons of my shirt as I ambled down the sidewalk in the heat of the day. It was as if a weight had disappeared from my back and I could breathe again.

I wandered past the Quiznos and saw it was already busy, the line out the door. I couldn’t tell if Lisa was working but she would be busy now, anyway, and I wasn’t hungry.

I sauntered aimlessly through the streets, looking at my favorite buildings and thinking about days long gone. Would my father be proud of what I’d done today? Mom would probably say, “Finally,” when Isaw her next time.
