Chapter 27

Where were you?

I turned my face against the pillows and closed my eyes. I reached under the pillow and I was surprised when I felt the lump of quartz that usually rested on my windowsill. I sat up startled, the quartz clutched in my hands. When did I put it there? More importantly, why?

I heard the thump of something against the window at the foot of my bed, got up and peered slowly out into the blackness beyond my screen. I saw nothing.

Where…

A beetle hit the screen and made me jump. I watched transfixed as it flew away only to return and hit the screen again. The second time it clung to the screen and scuttled across it. Something, there had been something about the beetle. Nothing, there was nothing behind my eyes. I was beginning to feel like a bell jar had fallen over my life. Everything I needed to know was on the other side, held temptingly from my mind by a thin glass wall. If I were Alice, this would be when I would try to step through the looking glass.
