Chapter 26

“Please,” Barrett’s pleaded, “take me instead. I will make the right choice. I will. Please!”

The demon moved away suddenly and with the removal of its weight, Barrett fell forward. Its hideous laughter echoed so loudly the ground again began to shake. I turned back and saw the thing in full sight for the first time and in seeing it, I felt my breath catch in my throat.

It indeed stood on two legs that appeared bowed like the haunches of a deer. Its torso was thick and covered in black shadows that moved with the demon. Its arms were long and dragged at the ground. Each hand appeared to have three long vicious looking claws that made a sound like a cruel wind when they moved. I wanted to see its face but it had turned away. I could only make out two massive bullhorns twisting up from what I could only describe as a triangular head. I saw no more because just beyond it, I could see the body of Hilary. I saw Barrett struggle to get up and move towards her.
