I shrugged it off. “Stalls are ready. We have a couple coming by to lease Summer and Clover for a week-long trail ride. Anything I should know about?”

“No, sir, they’re healthy and ready for action,” he replied as he removed his hat to wipe sweat off his brow.

“Good. You and the boys put away the horses, and then call it a day. Y’all did great work, and I appreciate it, as always.”

“Sure thing, boss.” Melvin glanced behind me before adding, “I hope you have a good night, too. It’s about time you moved on to something tenable. Bulldog will never settle down.” He slapped me on the shoulder and went to see about the horses.

It seemed like the whole world was matchmaking on my behalf. Sighing at the inevitable, I walked back to where Sam waited. “I have enough food to share, if you’re interested in simple home-cooking.”

His grin was toothy. “I thought you’d never ask.”
