“You okay?”
“I’ll be fine. Sorry to hold everyone up.” Jae rubbed at the spot where he had landed on the rocks and flinched.
“This happens all the time,” Amir said. “We don’t mind. We even come prepared, see?”
As promised, Jake R. was at the ready with arnica cream and antiseptic spray. Miraculously, Jae’s arm had missed the rocks and landed in a cushioning pile of leaves, so while there were a few twigs and specks of dirt stuck to him, the skin wasn’t broken. Jake R. offered him the cream instead. “Rub this on where it hurts,” he said. “It’ll help.”
Jae waved him off. “It’s really okay.”
“Well, can you move your arm?”
“Yeah. I’ve had worse. It was my rib that took most of it, but I’m ninety-nine percent sure it’s not busted.”
Jake held out the cream again. “I’m serious. This will at least tide you over until you can get home and put ice on it.”
