Amir was determined to bring this up with Jae before they all went home, but once again he didn’t get many chances and he was too anxious about the subject to bring it up out of the blue around other people. The best he could muster was bringing up how beautiful the reflection of the autumn leaves in the river was. Jae looked up long enough to nod.
“It really is,” was all he said.
When they got back to the parking lot, Amir hovered near Jae as he said goodbye to Noelle and Hayden and Sean and the others. Sean, in typical fashion, gave Jae a single parting pat on the shoulder. Nobody missed the brief twinge of pain and fear in Jae’s eyes, but none of them said anything. Amir was too stunned. Pieces were clicking together, and his heart sank deeper as every clue fell into place.
Under the pretense of helping Jae get his bike onto the rack strapped to his trunk, Amir told Ken to go wait for him at their car. Ken cocked a suspicious eyebrow, but waved Amir off without a word.
