Chapter 22

Seventeen and a half hours later, Amir got the reply he had been dreading, but not in the way he expected. It was a habit for him now to check his e-mail on his phone whenever there was a lull at the store. As such, he was looking down when the door opened. He glanced up to an image straight out of his nightmares.

Jae shuffled up to the counter, but he was barely recognizable. A reddish indigo bruise spread from the swollen bridge of his nose under each eye like a Rorschach inkblot. Truer indigo blotches stained the left side of his jaw and his right temple. His hair, which usually looked styled even after it had been trapped under a sweaty helmet for several hours, was disheveled and had a greasy sheen under the florescent lights. He held a backpack over one shoulder with a trembling hand. His already slender eyes were narrowed by the bruises beneath them and were blinking back tears that escaped regardless and cut gleaming trails to his chin.
