“I really don’t,” Todd said. “I’ve seen enough Law and Order to know how bad these situations can get. You are more than welcome to bunker down with us as long as you need.”

Amir wanted to roll his eyes and remind Todd that watching things on TV did not translate to real-life experience. However, the intentions were good. He twisted in his seat to face Jae, who was sitting next to his hermit crabs to ensure they would be fine on the road. “I’m happy you got out of there,” he said.

Jae smiled back. “I’m happy, too.”
