Chapter 26

“I don’t think he’s here,” I said when we were back at the front of the store. “Nope.” I looked outside. “The truck’s gone.”

“Shoot.”

“We should have gone to the courtesy desk to have them page anyone named AJ over the P.A.”

“Dude. Where was that idea twenty minutes ago?” Major asked.

“In the brain of someone smart. Frick! Another dead end.” I kicked the wheels of the cart someone had left two feet from where the others were corralled.

“I’m sorry.” Major rubbed my bare arm. “Would shopping for doggie toys make you feel better?”

“I think it would. Especially shopping for dog toys with you. You’re going to be a doggy daddy!” I nearly squealed.

“I know.” We headed for the pet aisle. “I can’t wait.”

After nearly emptying several shelves, we left Target, weighed down with bags. I had five in each hand. Major had more, plus a huge bag of kibble.

“I think we got carried away,” he said.

“Some are for the shelter. Plus, you bought stuff for the apartment.”
