Chapter 49

“Music heals. I can help with that.” AJ took his hand, then reached for mine. Once he had them both, he put them together, Major’s and mine. “I just had a feeling that would be better.”

But Major let go.

There was truly something magical about the stage. I found myself having a good time somehow. Major was, too, and even Abby. I couldn’t smile during my scenes, not the first one because I had to be stern as Major and I, along with our other three governors, threatened little Matthew in song during the titular “Oliver.” I did smile afterward, however—a lot—because AJ had little Matthew turn the tables and sing a verse to us! Though the kid was only about three feet six, he had a voice that could blow down a house, like the Big Bad Wolf. It was impossible to keep a straight face, despite AJ yelling “Stay in character,” when in a literal case of role reversal, Matthew shoved Major hard and told him he was a bad boy.
