“She always said affection is more important than sexual compatibility.”

“Really?”

Major looked at me, but said nothing.

“Aren’t they equally important?” I asked.

“We love Abby.” He focused on the bannister again.

“Yes.”

“She has stories to tell as well, Sal, and she will when she’s ready.”

“Oh.” I looked at the cars out in front of us now, counting how many blue and yellow license plates there were versus the blue and white ones. I didn’t want to make any of this about my hurt feelings, about the secrets the two of them had kept from me.

“Part of me moving on now is making sure she can. I think we’ve repaired the damage I did by pretending at first. See, maybe if I hadn’t let it go on like it did, for as long as it did, maybe she could have moved on quicker, too. I really don’t feel like I deserve to be happy until the two of you are. There’s still more to fix, like the rift I’ve now caused between us.”
