Chapter 51

“Even when the love is there, things get complicated,” I said.

“This is true.”

“I’ll call them,” I vowed, just as my phone app let me know my cab had arrived. “And I’ll see you all in a few days.”

AJ was already at Major’s side when I glanced back from the exit. I wondered then, if I was in a play about my own life, would I be playing the coward or the hero.

Opening night, which had seemed so far away back in May, was nearly upon us by the time I returned to New York the night of our final dress rehearsal. I could hear the show already in progress before I even walked through the lobby door into the house. The governors were onstage. AJ had my place beside Major. Their voices blended perfectly.

“Oh, my God!” Major leapt down and came running toward me. AJ had definitely not yelled “Cut!”

“Oomph.” The wind was knocked out of me by the collision.

“You made it!”
