Chapter 52

“Are you two okay?” I asked.

“That scene still brings back too many memories,” he said. “Somehow I figured I’d be past it all by now.” He wiped his eyes with both hands. “Sykes! Sykes!” then startled me when he started the angry chant we yelled to reenter as he got right back into character.

I followed him onstage, and we finished the final scene of the show for the last time without an audience.

The story ended happily ever after—more or less—just as it was written to do. Nancy wouldn’t get hers, but Oliver did, as he went off to live with his newly discovered grandfather. That seemed kind of real to me. While some people got what they wanted, oftentimes, someone else ended up left out of the joy.

We practiced curtain calls, then AJ dismissed us for the night. “Rest! Tomorrow, we do it for real.”
