Chapter 14

“Pete agrees,” Bill replied with a laugh. “I’m surprised you’re up and moving already.”

“Trust me, I’m going home as soon as Mattie gets here. I’m tired of wearing the same clothes I had on two nights ago.”

“You could have said something. You know I keep spares in my office.”

“Uh-huh. I’d swim in them.” The truth, Bill figured. Roger was what Carol called sylph-like at five-seven and maybe one-thirty soaking wet. Not that his girlfriend cared. She was five-two and so slender she’d blow away in a stiff breeze.

Mattie arrived just then, taking off her coat and gloves to put in the closet under the stairs. She came back, telling Roger to go home, then took her place behind the front desk. “Did you have fun yesterday?” she asked Bill, smiling sweetly.

“More to the point, did you?” he replied. “It’s not often you and Mike get to spend a day together.”
