Erik stood at the window in the upstairs parlor, looking at the view of the mountains. He’d gone to the window to check the condition of the highway, because he was in the process of debating the wisdom of sticking around versus leaving while he could. Moving on to somewhere with fewer complications, as he thought of it.

Which is stupid. Bill’s not a complication. Hell, he’s probably not remotely interested in me, and I don’t want him to be. There’s no way I’m getting mixed up with another man. Not after the bastard.
