Chapter 23

With a bright smile, Bill hugged him back. Then he stood, saying, “We really should get moving. Get your backpacks and I’ll deliver you to my folks’ house before they wonder if you’ve changed your mind.”

“Won’t they be asleep already?”

Bill snorted. “These are my parents we’re talking about. Perpetual night owls. So move it. Where’s your jacket?”

“In one of my saddlebags. I didn’t want to worry about what to do with it, when I came inside. I had more important things on my mind.”

“Well, mine’s in the mud room. Let’s get it, then your stuff, and—”

“Move it, as you so eloquently put it.”

Bill had been correct, Erik found out when they got the house. Tom and Carol were still up, although in bathrobes, rather than what they’d worn to the dinner. After Bill left, Carol took Erik up to his room, pointing out the bathroom on the way.

“Feel free to shower, if you want. I put out a set of towels for you.”

“Thank you.”
