Chapter 52

Eventually, after an interminable time, the kettle whistled. Lew drew back slightly to turn the gas off and Alec stepped away and spoke into the weighted silence. “I need to get back to the station and then go to the hospital and find out what’s happening.” Tyler’s whole body tensed.

“I’m pretty sure that was the same thing that killed Archie. You said there were a load more bodies. Were they the same?” He poured more water into the teapot, hands still shaking.

He was supposed to be the one asking the questions, but he answered all the same. “More or less. There are…changes…in the brain. Even if they aren’t mauled, the changes are there.”

“What sort of ‘changes’?”

“The brain…the brain is dissolved.”

Silence. Then. “Dissolved? How many of them?”
