“Thank you. I thought it would be me comforting you, not the other way round.”

“I’m just grateful I got the chance to know her. If she dies, at least I’ll have had that. She hasn’t moved at all since they put her in bed.” His voice broke a little and there was a small, quiet silence. “I’m gonna go home now, get some clean duds, tell the boys what happened.” A pause whilst Lew flinched. “Not the whole thing. Just that she’s hurt and in here and such. And when you know what you’re going to do to get that thing, you let me know, you hear? Let me know what I can do.” He turned, with dignity, to Carter, still standing by the doorway. “I’ll be back this afternoon, Detective Inspector Carter.”

Carter inclined his head. “I’ll tell them to expect you, Mr. Rollins. Do you have a telephone number I can call if there’s any change? Or somewhere I can send a message?”
