The old man was thoughtful. “That might explain what I felt.” He mused out loud. “I don’t think she’ll be able to Work anymore. Her ability is gone. That’s why she couldn’t feel The Border.”

“That’s what I wondered. It seems like that might be the case. I’m sure her throat wound closed a little whilst we were waiting for the doctor—I think it might have been the Pull she took.” Tyler was thinking out loud, as well. “She should have been dead.”

Grant had been silent up to this point, but Alec saw him draw a breath to speak and braced himself for whatever excoriating dismissal was coming. “So, we think it’s been Pulling from the victims to feed? But that Miss Fonteyne managed to somehow reverse the Pull before it attacked her and that’s why she wasn’t killed outright?”

There was a short, pungent silence and then Tyler said, “Yes, Detective Sergeant Grant, that is exactly what we think.” His tone was rather tight and perfectly polite.

Grant blinked at him, blandly.
