Chapter 39

“He better get off his fine ass and get ready soon, or I’ll call her and do it for him!” Mazie said.

“Don’t you dare!” Br’er shot back at her.

“Well, it ain’t fair to you for him to pretend you don’t exist.”

“I can wait, and if it never happens, what we have is enough for me.”

“Ain’t fair,” Mazie said, shaking her head.

“Mazie!” Br’er said warningly.

“Just sayin’” she said, and offered Mickey some waffle.

Later that morning Br’er, Ray, Mazie, and Mickey were out shopping for a Christmas tree. Mazie and Mickey wore matching jackets of green and red plaid. Both had jingle bells attached.

They now were on their third lot, and Mazie had yet to find the appropriate tree. Ray and Br’er stood together and watched as she rummaged through the forest of trees that had not yet been purchased. Ray was holding Mickey. Mazie had given him to Ray, insisting he be held as the little dog’s feet were cold.
