Chapter 41

“I had a good lunch with Adrienne and Alex,” Ray was saying. “It’s actually a good thing we ran into them. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have gotten to see them for the holiday. They want to have Christmas Eve alone, just the two of them to celebrate their engagement, and then tomorrow they’re driving to Dayton to spend the day with Alex’s folks.”

“Will they tell Alex’s folks about their engagement, do you think?” Mazie asked pointedly, looking across the table at Br’er.

“Well,” Ray began, “evidently Alex’s mom is into the feminist thing, and her dad has had an equality sticker on their car for years. Her brother is a lawyer with the ACLU. He does lots of work with LGBTQ groups. So it’s all cool.”

“Lucky Adrienne,” Mazie said.

Br’er gave her a look. “Won’t she be with your family on the twenty-sixth, then?” he asked Ray.
