I nodded and bit back the lingering questions. “Of course.”
He took us out of town, and after a few minutes, he turned off on a small road leading into the forest. My eyes widened when I realized where we were going, and like I’d guessed, he parked in front of the gates to Pine Forest Cemetery after a couple minutes.
The engine clicked as the car cooled down, and he sat immovable in his seat. I forced myself to wait, even though I had a million things to ask him. The questions leaked out through my fingers instead, and I played an inaudible melody on my thigh as I waited.
“Okay, let’s go,” he said, unbuckled, and got out of the car without looking in my direction. He opened the back door and picked out something as I scrambled to join him. Clasping a single sunflower, he reached out his free hand for me and I grabbed it eagerly.
