Chapter 30

Two rings tumbled out. Two wide, satin-finished platinum rings. I didn’t have to look inside to know that the inscription read our names, our engagement date, and the words Now and Forever followed by a heart.

My hand started trembling. “Why are you carrying these around?” I whispered. My finger had been nakedafter I’d taken my ring off two years earlier, and I’d never gotten used to the feeling of my hand without it. I’d thought I’d never see it again, and here it was. More beautiful than ever.

“When Momma…” He drew a shuddering breath. “I put them in my wallet after Momma died. So I’d be prepared when I saw you again.”

“Prepared for what?”

“To put it back where it belongs.”

I traced one of the bands with a trembling finger and then the other. Tingles spread from my fingertip through my body, and my throat closed. I looked up at Vee. Gazed into his beautiful eyes that told me everything I needed to know. “Promise me we’ll be okay,” I said.
