Chapter 31

It was ridiculous to be this nervous, but it didn’t matter how many times I told myself, it didn’t help. I fluttered my fingers in the air and bent them backward carefully to stretch them out. The warm-up exercises always calmed me down even if I wasn’t going to play.

I prepared a jug of ice water and carried it along with the basket of freshly baked bread and the salad to the dining table in the living room. Taking a deep breath, I took it all in. Nudged the knife a littlecloser to the plate, frowned, and nudged it back to its original position. Grabbed a wine glass and heldit up, examining it carefully for fingerprints, before putting it back down.

“Calm down,” I told myself for the gazillionth time. “You’re not having the Queen of England over for dinner.”

At seven on the dot, the doorbell rang and I plastered a wide smile on my face, hoping it didn’t look asnervous as it felt. When I was met with honest smiles from my visitors, it turned real.
