“But we have twice your number and not a problem finding food at Home Cove,” Sommar said.

“What’s it like to have the males around?” Barakat asked.

“It’s a big help. The Journey and Migration aren’t as stressful with more protection.”

“But don’t they get in the way?” Belzer asked.

“The males have their place in the pod, the females theirs. We live in harmony.”

“Sartin, I have a gift for you and Sommar,” Ballard interrupted. She revealed two matching necklaces made from shells, rocks, and other matter from the sea.

Sartin swelled with pride and tears pricked his eyes. “They are beautiful.” All his life he had seen the gifts given to Couples by their parents. Ballard’s work rivaled any that his aunts had given his cousins at their intended Coupling.

He lifted one of the trinkets from his mother’s hands and hung it over Sommar’s neck. Sommar repeated the gesture.
