“What’s going on?” Sartin asked, put on the defensive with Wickizer’s appearance.
“Nothing, just bored on my own watch. I thought I’d come see what the young lovers were up to.” Wickizer flicked their necklaces up into their faces while he panted heavily, trying to catch his breath.
“Well let’s go to the rock and let you rest, old man,” Sartin said.
They swam to the crag designated for the watch area. Wickizer climbed as far out of the water as he could. He bent his tail up to his chest and held it in place with his arms.
“What’s wrong?” Sartin asked. He sat on the rocks, leaving most of his tail in the water.
“I just need to catch my breath,” Wickizer said. When he did, he asked, “Are you nervous about tonight?”
“No,” Sommar answered, an edge to his voice. Sommar’s tone indicated he didn’t appreciate Wickizer either. If Belzer asked them to live with her pod, they’d have to get along until…
