Chapter 24

The snap of a twig nearby made him jump. The sudden jarring sent a jolt of pain from his spine into his head.

A land person!

Between the pain, the exhaustion, and the sight of the land person, Sartin shrieked. The land person dropped his armload of sticks and fell to his knees. He grabbed his ears. His face scrunched up.

The physical pain in Sartin’s body and the sound of his own cry caused him to pass out again.

Blood filled the water surrounding Sommar and the shark, and the sound of his mate’s dying cries pierced Sartin’s heart.

Sartin woke with a start. He shook his head. He had been dreaming again. Each time he came around just asthe shark bit into Sommar. The dream must have been real, a replay of something he’d witnessed. The song was gone, Sommar must be dead.
