Chapter 25

For the first time since Sartin awoke, he examined his injured fluke. Once beautiful and strong, only about half of his fin remained. Decayed, shredded tendrils of flesh floated in the seawater pool in which Sartin lay. He’d have to tear those away when he regained his strength. Sartin pulled some leaves off the plants near him and took a small bite. He spat the tiny bite out, but the pungent taste remained in his mouth.

Sartin heard the trees and bushes swish back and forth. Birds fluttered in the trees. Slowly, the land person emerged through the trees again. He walked carefully and put the creature on the end of the spearback in the orange light.

The stranger folded his legs underneath him and pulled the other spear out of the fire. He looked at Sartin, and then glanced away quickly when they made eye contact. He busied himself, as if he was tryingto avoid eye contact.
