Maru’s eyes sparkled as he looked down at Sartin. “I thought you had swum away.”
Sartin broke the gaze. “I will stay until my bearings come back. I need to return to my people. I need to see if my mother is still alive.” Although he doubted neither his mother nor Sommar were still alive, he needed to find out for sure.
“You will?”
Sartin returned a weak smile. “After the shark attack, I’m afraid of what would happen if I went out on the open ocean by myself.”
Sartin suspected the songs he had grown up with and his ability to locate Winter Beach were connected. If that were true, might Sommar still be alive?
Maru’s arms grew limp and he fell into Sartin. The water slapped between their chests as they bumped together. Sartin treaded water as he held Maru. They bobbed along the surface, staring into each other’s eyes.
“Should we eat some fruit then go search for some fish?” Maru had broken the moment.
“Sure.” Maybe the desire Sartin saw in his eyes was all in his damaged head.
