Chapter 66

The distress signal sounded, but it wasn’t his own.

The entire village covered their ears with their hands and cringed to the ground. Even Maru broke his stoic trance. Simultaneously, the Sea People broke from the surf, appearing on the beach as the night waves retreated from the land.

“Sartin!” Sommar led the Sea People out of the water onto the beach to save Sartin.

“Sommar! How did you find me?”

“I followed the beads from the necklace your mother gave us. I continued this way for seven sleeps after I found the last bead on the other island when our song came back to my head.”

The vines that held Sartin snapped, and interrupted his calculations of the time Sommar had spent searching for him. He tumbled into the fire and rolled toward the water to escape the flames.

Sartin rose on his arms to survey the scene. Most of the villagers had managed to escape the Distress Signals being emitted by the Sea people, except Maru.

“Maru, I must go,” Sartin said.
