Chapter 70

After the sun reached its zenith, Stover led the group to a small island. Some napped while others bobbed on the surface of the ocean, watching for signs of the land people. After a while, they switched roles. When they deemed it clear of enemies and predators, they pulled themselves onto the beach and ate the fish they grabbed while swimming in. The nourishment filled Sartin’s stomach and he was ready to continue the journey.

Springer and Shriner, a young male couple, found a piece of branch and tossed it around, playing the wood game of young children.

“The wood game is too distracting. We need to watch out for predators and get home,” Stover said.

“I thought that was just something we told the children to keep them focused on the Summer or Winter Journeys?” Springer asked.

“It applies to those of us in a small pod as well,” Saric said.

“We protect ten times as many people as this. We’ll be fine,” Shriner said.
