They had reached the end of the hall by then. Castien looked at the stairs then cocked a questioning eyebrow at Theirn. He nodded and they walked quietly down them to the ground floor. Neither of them was willing to test their luck on the first floor as they knew the guards were quartered there.
They came to the ground floor at the entrance to the Great Hall. It was dark, the only light coming from the fireplace. They moved as silently as possible across the straw covered floor of the Hall to the kitchen. At this hour even it was vacant although Castien knew it would not be long before the cooks and their assistants would arrive to start their day.
From there they entered another, smaller hall. Castien stopped suddenly when he saw someone stood at the far end. A man looked out one of the narrow windows before he apparently realized they were there and turned to bow slightly in their direction with a finger to his nose. Then he beckoned for them to join him.
