Chapter 25

“Did.” Conley kissed him. “When we finish our walk…”

“We could go back now,” Brian suggested hopefully.

“Nope. You said we have to work off dinner and that’s what we’re going to do.” Conley took Brian’s hand as they continued down the street. “I love seeing all the families celebrating together,” he said, gesturing toward one of the many homes where the curtains were still open, allowing him to see into living and dining rooms.

“It reminds me of when I was a kid.” Brian stopped, looking at Conley. “I know, now, that you didn’t have a family to celebrate with, but did your priest do Thanksgiving?”

“He did. Not a huge meal, but it was nice.” Another lie in my long list of them to him. If…when he finds out will he be able to forgive me? He sent up a silent prayer that Brian would, once he understood why they had been necessary. That wouldn’t happen until spring. Until then…I keep piling lie upon lie. Conley sighed deeply.

“What’s wrong?” Brian asked.
