He could. The question was, and he asked, “Will you be able to inscribe something on the back, and have it ready by Saturday?”

She disappeared into the back of the shop with the pendant. Five minutes later she returned with a man approximately her age.

“It might be possible, depending on what you want the inscription to say,” the man told him. “The simpler the better at this point. I’m certain you understand.”

Conley knew exactly what he wanted to say, writing it down when the man handed him a pen and paper. “I know it’s not short and sweet,” he said. “I’m willing to pay extra for you to do it.”

They bartered on the price, finally settling on one which they both agreed was fair. Conley paid for the pendant and the inscription, promising to return to pick it up Saturday evening after he got off work.
