Before either of them could say more, a few others arrived, all of them vaguely familiar since I’d likely seen them around town at some point.

Laura and Belinda introduced me to each new person, and it was getting a little uncomfortable to be stared at and fawned over so blatantly. I hadn’t expected to endure a meat market in a laidback coffeehouse. I guess looks had been deceiving.

After a few minutes, a discussion began about stereotypes, and though I listened in and even commented here and there, I felt acute disappointment. Where was Asher? I didn’t want to admit it, but I’d gone through all this trouble to be presentable for the idiot. The least he could do was show up.
