“You’re picking me up at my condo, right? My mother always told me that’s how you know a date will treat you well.”

“She was right.” He walked me to the front entrance of the hospital. “Have a nice afternoon, sweetheart, and I’ll see you later, okay?” I kissed him on the cheek, giving the greeter at the door something to spread around if she so chose as I left the building. I would be old news soon enough, so I wasn’t worried anymore.

Paula was in a good mood when I got back to the office. “It went well?” she asked as I settled in behind my desk.

“It did for me.And Ruth was happy. Can’t say the same for the others, but they’ll get over it. The hospital has a plan, a good strategy to make things better. It’s up to them, now.”

“Did you have a nice lunch with Lance?” Her knowing expression made me want to stick out my tongue. So I did.

She stared at me. “What’s come over you lately?”

“Well, Lance, of course.” I winked at her and she blushed.
